WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

EU policies have reaffirmed the importance of protected areas for the conservation of biological diversity. In this context, the “Biodiversity Protection“ thematic aims at strengthening the management and networking capacities of protected areas, to adapt and improve protection measures. The preservation of the biodiversity of protected natural coastal and maritime ecosystems is a key element of the future Mediterranean. The projects found under this thematic are also working to reach a better integration of protected areas in regional development strategies (exchange of information, strategies, and regulations). They should aim at, for example, improving conservation status and water management, fighting against invasive species and monitoring fishing and tourism activities. The Biodiversity Protection community is led by PANACeA project, whose main objective is the creation of synergies and new partnerships among Mediterranean stakeholders. PANACeA also seeks to boost networking and management efforts in Mediterranean Protected areas (MPAs) as a mechanism to enhance nature conservation and protection in the region. This action will be truly formalised through the Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Platform (BPP), which contains recommendations and data gathered by the whole community. As a result, the whole community drafted and signed a Declaration for an Ecosystem based approach to biodiversity protection and management, that any interested party can adopt.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE THEY OBTAINED ?

The BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION "community" is influencing regional policy efforts for environmental sustainability. The whole community drafted and signed a Declaration for an Ecosystem based approach to biodiversity protection and management, that any interested party can adopt.

All tools from this community

MED Biodiversity Protection Knowledge Platform

Description:

The MED Biodiversity Protection Knowledge Platform contains recommendations and data gathered by the Mediterranean biodiversity protection community participating in the Biodiversity Protection Community - all the modular projects approved by the steering committee of the Interreg Med programme 2014-2020 - together with external validated open source information and data.

Functionalities:

Library, providing access to relevant project results, products, and available documentation; The geoportal (or map viewer), which can be used to display biodiversity spatial data, and which consists of two main elements: 1. A map viewer, where geospatial data can be displayed and individual queries can be performed; 2. A Catalogue viewer, allowing the user to navigate and discover available geospatial data, through a search engine and filtering tools.

T-MEDNET Platform

Description:

T-MEDNet initiative is devoted to develop an observation network on climate change effects in marine coastal ecosystems by spreading the acquisition of standard monitoring protocols on seawater temperature and biological indicators over large-scale and long-term.

Functionalities:

Maps, graphs, tables, lists, satellite pictures and videos; contributing to track and assess climate change effects on marine coastal ecosystems by providing sound information on: - Past, present and future in temperature conditions - Biological impacts
